Motivation and Background

The Young Engineers & Scientists Initiative (i-YES) Education Track is jointly organized by the IEEE Communication Society Education Services Board (ESB) and the ComSoc Young Professionals (YP). This time it will feature a Session on “Pre-University WG Activities and Experiences” and a Panel on "Sharing experiences in starting & running Pre-U activities" followed by interactive discussion with the audience!

Periklis Chatzimisios, IEEE ComSoc Young Professionals Committee (YP) Chair, International Hellenic University, Greece & University of New Mexico, USA

Periklis ChatzimisiosPeriklis Chatzimisios serves as a Professor in the Department of Information and Electronic Engineering at the International Hellenic University (Greece). Moreover, he has been awarded the title of Researcher Professor by the University of New Mexico (USA). He is also a Visiting Fellow in the Faculty of Science & Technology, Bournemouth University (UK). Dr. Chatzimisios is/has been involved in several standardization and IEEE activities serving as a Member of Education Services Board, Standards Program Development Board, Industry Outreach Board and Online Content Board under the IEEE Communication Society (ComSoc). He is currently the Chair of the IEEE ComSoc Young Professionals Standing Committee, Chair of the Communications Chapter & Professional Activities for the IEEE Greece Section and an active member of the IEEE Future Networks Initiative. In the past he served as the Chair of Technical Committee on Information Infrastructure and the Vice Chair of Technical Committee on Big Data.

Stefano Giordano, Member of IEEE ComSoc Education Services Board (ESB), University of Pisa, Italy

Stefano Giordano is Full Professor at the University of Pisa and responsible of the TLC networks labs. He is senior member of the IEEE Comsoc and former Chair of the CSIM TC. He is member of IFIP WG 6.3 and of the ISOC (1992). He is the representative of the UNIPI in the Scientific Committee of CNIT. He founded with Juniper Networks the first European Juniper Networks Higher Learning Center. He is author of more than 300 papers on conferences and journals. He is associate editor of the Wiley's IJCS and of the JCSS. He is member of the editorial board of the IEEE COMST. He was co-founder of three start-ups (Nextworks, Netresults Natech) and co-founder of the Cubit Consortium where at present is President of the Scientific and Technical Committee. He is Vice-President of the TLC Eng Program at Unipi. His research interests are mainly related to the development of SDN/NFV solutions for IoT particularly in Smart Agriculture and Networked Cyber Physical Systems.

Steven Izzo, JHU/APL, USA

Steven Izzo retired in 2019 as a Senior Consultant and Engagement Leader with deep expertise in the Digital Operations practice of Nokia Bell Labs Consulting. For more than 10 years he engaged with global communication service companies providing network and service management business and operations analysis, process and metrics design, and process optimization. Prior to joining Bell Labs, Mr. Izzo worked in software engineering, strategy, marketing and product management roles. Mr. Izzo has a patent awarded for service quality metrics selection, has presented at multiple conferences and is an author of articles and papers in industry publications.

Ana Garcia Armada, University Carlos III of Madrid, Spain

Ana Garcia Armada (Senior Member, IEEE) is currently a Professor with Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain. She has published approximately 200 refereed papers and holds four patents. Her research interest includes signal processing applied to wireless communications. She serves on the editorial board for IEEE Transactions on Communications and Open Journal of the IEEE Communications Society. She has served for TPC of more than 50 conferences. She has been part of many organizing committees. She has received several awards from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, including an Excellent Young Researcher Award and an Award for Best Practices in Teaching. She was awarded the Bell Labs Prize 2014 (third place) for shaping the future of information and communications technology. She received the Outstanding Service Award from the IEEE ComSoc Signal Processing for Communications and Computing Technical Committee (formerly SPCE).

Ashutosh Dutta, JHU/APL, USA

Ashutosh Dutta is currently Chief 5G Strategist and JHU/APL Sabbatical Fellow at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Labs (JHU/APL), USA. He also serves as Chair for Electrical and Computer Engineering for Engineering Professional Program at JHU. His career, spanning more than 30 years, includes Director of Technology Security and Lead Member of Technical Staff at AT&T, CTO of Wireless at a Cybersecurity company NIKSUN, Inc., Senior Scientist in Telcordia Research, Director of Central Research Facility at Columbia University, adjunct faculty at NJIT, and Computer Engineer with TATA Motors. Ashutosh is author of more than 120 technical papers and 31 issued patents. As a Technical Leader in 5G and security, Ashutosh has been serving as the founding Co-Chair for the IEEE Future Networks Initiative that focuses on 5G standardization, education, publications, testbed, and roadmap activities. Ashutosh is IEEE Communications Society's Distinguished Lecturer for 2017-2020 and as an ACM Distinguished Speaker (2020-2022). Ashutosh currently serves as chair for IEEE Future Networks Technical Community and Member-At-Large for IEEE Communications Society. He co-founded the IEEE STEM conference (ISEC) and helped to implement EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) projects in several high schools.

Yessica Saez Barrios, Universidad Tecnologica de Panama, Panama

She is an electronics and telecommunications engineer, graduated from the Technological University of Panama and has an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University, USA. She is a research professor at the Electrical Engineering Department of the Technological University of Panama and as Research Coordinator of the Azuero Branch. She is a member of the National Research System (SNI) of Panama, Member of the Board of Directors of IEEE Panama Section, member of the Women in Communications Engineering (WICE) Committee, Communications Coordinator and editor-in-chief of the ComSoc Latin America Newsletter.

Victor P. Gil Jimenez, University Carlos III of Madrid, Spain

Victor P. Gil Jimenez received the M.S in Telecommunication degree and the PhD. from University Carlos III of Madrid, in 2001 and 2005, respectively, all of them with Honors. He is with the department of Signal Theory and Communications at the University Carlos III of Madrid as Associate Professor. He has led several national and international projects. His interests are in the field of the advanced multicarrier systems for wireless radio and visible light communications. At IEEE, he was one of the founders of the IEEE UC3M Student Branch in 2001, vice-chair and treasure. He has held the IEEE Spanish Signal Processing and Communications joint chapter chair 2015 – 2023. He has lead and been involved in Pre-STEM activities since 2016. His team was awarded in 2022 with the second price at the IEEE ComSoc Pre-STEM hands-on contest.

Mallellu Sai Prashanth, Vardhaman College of Engineering, India

Mallellu Sai Prashanth is the Junior Research Scholar at Vardhaman College of Engineering, Hyderabad and persuing his Master of Technology Degree from Vardhaman College of Engineering (Affiliated to JNTUH). He is presently volunteering as a YP Representative of IEEE Education Society and Deputy Chair, Publicity of IEEE WICE Comsoc, IEEE Collabratec Coordinator IEEE R10 SAC. Volunteered as Webinar and Training Coordinator of IEEE R10 SAC and Technical Coordinator, IEEE R10 Webinar Series during 2021. He also Contributed as Vice-Chair, IEEE India Council Student Coordiantion Team 2021 and now holds the responsibility as Section Student Representative of IEEE Hyderabad Section.
